Most people see the Thar Desert from a car window — a brief blur of gold between one destination and the next. At The Hukum, we believe the desert deserves more time than that. Our safari experiences are designed to take you in, not just through — across ridgelines where the sand shifts underfoot, past villages that have barely changed in centuries, and into open skies that demand you stop and look up.
Camel Safari
There is no more honest way to cross the desert than on the back of a camel. These quiet, unhurried animals have carried generations of traders, pilgrims, and wanderers across the Thar — and riding one is still the most intimate way to experience the desert’s true scale.
Our camel handlers are experienced locals who know the dunes by name. They will lead you away from the tourist-heavy trails to smaller, unspoiled patches of sand where you can watch the light change without interruption. The pace is slow. That is the entire point.
Jeep Safari
When the terrain demands more ground, our jeep safaris cover it. Covering sand ridges, rocky outcrops, and desert villages in one sweep, this is the safari for those who want range without sacrificing depth. Our drivers are locals — they know where the light falls best at dawn and
where the herds of chinkara deer graze in the late afternoon.

Sunrise & Sunset Desert Views
The Thar at sunrise and sunset is a different world than the Thar at noon. The low-angle light turns every grain of sand into a point of warmth, the shadows stretch long and quiet, and the heat relents just enough to let you breathe. Both are worth the early alarm or the patient wait.
We offer dedicated sunrise and sunset rides — camel or jeep — timed to reach the best dune crests right as the sky performs. Bring a camera, but do not hide behind it the whole time.
Sandboarding on the Dunes
No experience required. No special skill needed. Just willingness. Sandboarding on the high dunes of the Thar is exactly as simple and exhilarating as it sounds — you climb, you lean forward, and the fine desert sand carries you down in a long, smooth glide. The landing is soft. The grin lasts longer.
Sandboards are available to all guests staying at The Hukum and can be added to any safari outing. Children tend to be better at it than adults. You have been warned.
